George of the Jungle

We have three boston terriers - B, C, and D. There are no plans to add "A" to the clan, three is enough. B is my George of the Jungle. He is an amazing athlete, capable of jaw dropping leaps, running down a flight of stairs in a handstand and hopping around the yard like a kangaroo. He is also the world’s biggest klutz. I once watched him make a huge leap from the middle of the yard to the porch, only to collide with the porch column! He flew backwards and ended up upside down in a rose bush. It took awhile to pull all the thorns out of him. The rose bushes were removed long ago, but he keeps getting into scrapes.

Yesterday he was playing in the yard when Mr M heard a scream. Poor B was limping, it appears he ripped a nail off. The nail is still attached at the top, but it completely separated from the quick. He did the exact same thing to the exact same nail 6 months ago, so off to the vet we went. The vet has to sedate him to remove the entire nail and quick, it can’t heal otherwise. $275 later, B is stumbling around the house drunk on pain medication, with a club for a foot. He got a Wendy’s cheeseburger to make up for the rotten day. I swear I have the most expensive dogs on the planet.

Poor doggy! When you don't have kids pets are like children. I hope he feels better and enjoyed his cheeseburger.

BTW, I changed the address of my blog if you would please update the link. Thanks for linking!

I feel your pain, or rather my pup does. During his almost four years on this planet he has ripped off a nail three times, ripped a piece out of his pad once, partially dislocated his "elbow" (at six months old no less) and that doesn't count the time we went to the dog park and came back with giardia and an intestinal infection from drinking water other doggies played in, or the times we ended up visiting our neighborhood vet because of food allergies (Who knew bananas and probiotic yogurt were the fix?). Luckily it's been about nine months since the last vet visit. My grandmother has two papered poodles and tells me she paid her money up front, and I'm on the long term payment plan. I love my Bubba and his health is worth every penny. I just hate the guilt looks and long drawn out sighs when he can't run around. It's like the recuperation is worse than the injury. Hope "B" feels better.

@K Money - thanks, he's doing OK. He gets cut, scraped or bruised pretty much every week. The link has been updated :)

@ab - I can't wait to make it 9 months without the vet, that will take a miracle. Pretty much every time I get a little ahead with saving for vet bills, I get slapped with a big vet bill! Oh well, at least I can afford it. I can't imagine making him suffer in pain cause I can't pay the vet.

Ohhhh... Poor George! Being a clutz myself, I sympathize with his (and your) misfortune. Hopefully the nail will heal quickly.

Ouchie! I can empathize with you and pets, very very expensive! Have you considered pet insurance to cover incidents such as these? I pay around $75 a month for my two dogs just in case. After having one of my cats tear a ligament (!???!) and $600 later, I wished he would have been insured. :) Good luck with B.

I hear you on the vet bill front. We have two dogs and a small herd of cats, and someone is ALWAYS getting sick, needing special food, special medication, etc. One of my cats used to have an annual habit of ingesting a foreign object and requiring emergency surgery to the tune of $700-1000.

Not to mention the regular monthly expenses--I added it up and we actually spend 6% of our monthly budget on the pets (food, litter, treats, etc). Crazy! We love 'em like our kids, but geez.

@Kat - I'm a klutz too, guess he gets it from his momo!

@LL - at this point I'm pretty sure my pets are uninsurable! B also has epilepsy, his meds are cheap but the routine bloodwork is expensive. All my boys have LONG medical files, any insurer would be smart to stay far far away.

@FW - yeah with 3 dogs (4 when I had my foster chi) we are at the vets pretty much once a week. I've spent about $4000 in the last 4 months including C's adoption fees and vetting the chi.
