Someday this will be mine, but I don't know when that day will be. I’ve been waiting a long time. Mr M and I went engagement ring shopping back in the spring. I was worried our tastes would collide, we’re one of those opposites attract type couples. But somehow it worked out, the cut I wanted and the style he wanted went perfectly together. It was just a matter of money.
At the time it all seemed possible. He works freelance on Hollywood sets, not the most stable employment. The year started out rotten due to the writers strike but by spring he had a movie gig. We were due some optimism and besides, we’ve been together longer than most of the married couples we know. Shopping for an engagement ring was the next logical step in our relationship.
Then the work dried up. He mostly works on TV commercials, not many of them filming in the current economy. When there is work, the budgets are smaller and the pay is lower. Mr M is barely scraping by and an engagement ring is out of the question right now.
In many ways I don’t feel affected by the downturn, my job is stable and my income good. I’ve paid off most of my debts and should make big gains in my net worth next year. I can’t fool myself though, my investments have taken a huge hit and the family I want to build is on hold. I’m not alone, across the country the recession is causing weddings to be put off, couples to reconsider children and workers to delay retirement. For all of us, our futures feel like a life interrupted. What have you put on hold?

Sure it is, just get your head out of that De Beers marketing. Why does it have to be diamonds? Can't you get the same ring in gemstones?
You'd be surprised at the deals on jewelry right now. I bet you could get any stone you want.
Besides, isn't it PC in LA to not have blood diamonds and such?
I'm pretty sure all the glitterati have diamonds, ones that cost more than I make in a year! We looked at gemstones too, but the rings I like cost as much as this one. Besides, rubies and sapphires are dripping in blood too. Most come from Myanmar/Burma, gemstones support the military junta. Emeralds are too soft for an everyday ring.
You are right about prices coming down, when I went to pull a pic of the ring I found that the price had come down $1000. Blue Nile has one for $2300, so we are talking about it again.
Miss M,
Prices fluctuate quite drastically with the price of the metal in the setting. Sadly, gold is back up about $120/oz very recently, but I'm not sure about platinum or whatever you're thinking of. Anyway, read this for my sister's recent experience getting her engagement ring: http://moneymatekate.wordpress.com/2008/10/27/more-dumb-luck/
Might give you some ideas about timing the purchase, and of course the delivery!
