I’ve mentioned Care Credit before, in a post about higher than expected vet expenses. Care Credit provides low and no interest financing for medical expenses, including those for your pet. I never thought I would use their services, but life has that way of throwing curve balls at you.
Two weeks ago we adopted C, a boston terrier, from our local shelter. We have two other bostons and are familiar with the breed, hence that very first night I realized C had a problem. After two vet consultations, including a specialist, we have determined C needs surgery to help him breathe. He has an elongated soft palate that partially blocks his airway, it’s relatively common in smushy faced dogs. The surgeon will use a laser to trim the excess palate, it’s an outpatient procedure and he should be able to come home that night. The cost, $1200-$1500 if nothing goes wrong.
I haven’t posted my networth yet, wait till the weekend, but you’ll see that I can afford this surgery. However, Care Credit offers 0% interest financing options which I plan to take advantage of. The one drawback I can think of is a possible hit to my credit, since I have great credit and I don’t plan on applying for any other loans in the next few years, that should be OK.
Care Credit can be used for any sort of medical procedure including dental work and for elective surgeries like lasik or even a boob job! I don’t like how they play up the instant gratification aspect “CareCredit, a GE Money Company, gives you convenient payment options so you can get the procedure you want, when you want it.” If you want a boob job, please save your pennies first. But when the unexpected happens or you need medical treatment now, they provide a valuable service. Not all doctors and vets accept Care Credit, you can check on their website or call your doctor to find out. I also called the surgical vet to confirm they offer the 0% interest option prior to applying.
Once you’ve made the decision to apply you can do it online or over the phone. It’s a simple one page form asking for your personal information, income and the estimated cost of the procedure. Approval is instantaneous and they provide you with a form that you can use immediately or a card will arrive in about a week. I was approved for $4100, more than enough for C’s surgery. I hope you guys never need this service, but it’s good to know it’s out there if you do.
